Syracuse, N.Y. — The city is grieving the tragic loss of Adhon Thomas, a 15-year-old boy who was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon just outside the fencing of the Upper Onondaga Park Pool in the Strathmore neighborhood.
According to Syracuse Police spokesperson Kieran Coffey, Thomas was shot in the abdomen and was rushed to Upstate University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police Chief Joseph Cecile confirmed the shooting took place near the pool area, but as of now, the shooter remains at large and the firearm used in the attack has not been recovered.
The shooting was first detected by the city’s ShotSpotter system around 2 p.m., which alerted police to gunfire in the park. Shortly after, a 911 call reported the incident and stated a male had been shot in the stomach near the pool area.
By 3 p.m., a heavy police presence had arrived at the scene, including three crime scene vans and multiple patrol vehicles. The pool was immediately evacuated and cordoned off with police tape for safety and investigation. Nearby, dozens of children and community members gathered at a pavilion, shaken by the violent incident in what is usually a place of recreation and community gathering.
As of Wednesday, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in identifying the shooter.
The loss of Adhon Thomas is a devastating blow to his family, friends, and the entire Syracuse community. His death highlights the urgent need for continued efforts to address gun violence and ensure the safety of neighborhoods like Strathmore.
The community remains united in grief, hoping for answers and justice for Adhon.
