Belvidere, IL — The Belvidere School District is grieving the loss of one of its most dedicated and beloved staff members. Andy Werhane, a longtime educator and community fixture, passed away over the weekend, leaving behind a legacy of service and a community in mourning.
Werhane spent years shaping young minds and supporting his colleagues in various roles within the district. He served as a teacher, technology coach, and golf coach at Belvidere High School, and most recently held the position of assistant principal at Washington Academy.
“He is known by so many people in our community, both in his role as an educator and as a part of our community itself,” said Superintendent Dr. Cassandra Schug. “He is definitely deeply missed.”
In the wake of his sudden passing, the district has made grief counseling and emotional support available to students and staff. Administrators reached out over the weekend to prepare families for the news ahead of the return to school on Monday.
“We did reach out to our staff, to our families, so they would have that information before coming back to school,” Schug said. “Today, we do have the opportunity to discuss this with our staff and our students together so that we can help process that grief.”
Werhane’s absence was deeply felt at Washington Academy on Monday morning.
“I think it was really challenging today to come to school — and especially at Washington Academy — and not have him be there,” said Schug. “He is, again, a person who is just full of life.”
The emotional toll was evident throughout the day, as students and staff alike sought comfort in the wake of the loss.
“Students came in sad, wanting comfort — a lot of hugs, a lot of tears,” Schug added.
Known for his positive energy, deep commitment to education, and genuine care for students, Werhane leaves behind a powerful legacy that will continue to shape the Belvidere School District for years to come.
Funeral arrangements and memorial service details have yet to be announced.
