Autistic Pinellas County toddler, Kyrie Larry found dead in pond after wandering from home

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Pinellas County on Sunday afternoon after a 3-year-old boy with autism drowned in a nearby pond just hours after wandering away from his home.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the child, identified as Kyrie Larry, had been playing with his siblings when he left the family’s apartment undetected. Investigators say the boy’s parents, both of whom are hearing impaired, were unaware that he had exited the residence.

The incident occurred at the 3843 block of Lancaster Court in Palm Harbor around 3:30 p.m. Surveillance video from a Ring doorbell camera captured Kyrie leaving the apartment alone. The child, who was not wearing clothing at the time, was last seen heading in the direction of a nearby wooded area.

Upon realizing Kyrie was missing, his father, Marcus Larry, immediately called 911 to report his disappearance. A coordinated search was launched by deputies, K-9 units, and community members.

Tragically, Kyrie’s body was discovered later that evening in a pond located near the apartment complex. Authorities say the young boy, who was autistic and non-verbal, had drowned.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office has stated that no charges are expected to be filed, calling the incident a deeply unfortunate accident. They emphasized the family’s unique circumstances and the challenges of communication within the household.

“This is an incredibly tragic situation involving a vulnerable child and a loving family,” a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office said. “Our hearts are with them during this unimaginable time.”

Community members have expressed their grief and support for the Larry family, with several neighbors placing flowers and stuffed animals near the pond in Kyrie’s memory.

Support services and grief counseling are being made available to the family and local residents impacted by the tragedy.
