It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Carolyn Sanger, a radiant soul and beloved member of the Topsfield and Sutton communities, who tragically lost her life in an accidental fall at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. She was 49 years old.
Carolyn’s passing has left a profound void in the lives of all who knew her. Described by friends as “an amazing light to the world,” Carolyn was known for her generous spirit, healing presence, and deep compassion. Her unexpected loss has sent shockwaves through her family, friends, clients, and the broader community she lovingly served.
A Life of Healing and Light
Carolyn was the heart and soul behind a cherished massage, yoga, and Reiki studio located on Main Street in her hometown. Through her work, she touched countless lives — offering not just physical healing, but emotional and spiritual comfort as well. To step into her studio was to step into a sanctuary: a space filled with peace, warmth, and love.
“She could show up in a room, light up a room and give you a hug and you felt that warmth,” shared longtime friend Jamie Belsito. “She was a safe place, you could talk to her about anything.”
Clients and friends describe Carolyn as someone who radiated serenity. Whether through a calming voice during a yoga session or a thoughtful conversation over a cup of tea, she made people feel seen, heard, and held. Her intuitive nature and genuine kindness made her not just a healer, but a trusted confidante and a pillar of strength.
A Tragic Loss
The incident that took Carolyn’s life occurred at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton, Massachusetts, a natural landmark known for its dramatic rock formations and rugged beauty. Authorities believe the fall to be accidental. Sutton Police Chief Tom Calouro expressed condolences on behalf of the town, saying, “From the town of Sutton, we extend our sympathies to the family for this tragic, tragic loss.”
The news of her passing quickly spread, and a memorial of flowers began to form outside her studio as friends and community members gathered in grief and remembrance.
Remembering Carolyn
Carolyn’s vibrant energy, loving nature, and heartfelt work will never be forgotten. She was a sister, a daughter, a friend, and a spiritual guide to many. In every role she played, she led with compassion. Her memory lives on in the lives she touched and the peace she brought into the world.
“She was more than a friend,” said Mo Levasseur, another close companion. “She was family, to all of us who knew her.”
Her light may no longer shine in this world, but the warmth of her spirit continues to glow in the hearts she warmed — in every deep breath taken during yoga, in every gentle moment of reflection, and in every act of kindness inspired by her example.
Final Farewell
A memorial service to honor Carolyn’s life will be held in the coming days, with details to be announced by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to local mental health and wellness initiatives — causes close to Carolyn’s heart.
As we grieve this immeasurable loss, we also celebrate a life beautifully lived. Carolyn Sanger was a beacon of light, and though she has gone too soon, her spirit remains — gentle, healing, and ever present.
May she rest in peace and power.
