GULFPORT, MS – What began as a vibrant Cinco de Mayo celebration ended in heartbreak Sunday night, as 34-year-old Christopher Skinner was tragically killed in a shooting outside a local restaurant, turning a joyful evening into a scene of chaos, grief, and unanswered questions.

The incident occurred just after nightfall, when a large crowd had gathered to enjoy the holiday festivities near a well-known Gulfport dining establishment. According to the Gulfport Police Department, shots rang out in the parking lot area, sending partygoers running for cover. Amid the confusion, Skinner was struck multiple times.
Bystanders, along with responding officers, rushed to Skinner’s side and attempted emergency first aid while awaiting paramedics. He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but sadly succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
A Beloved Son, Friend, and Member of the Community
Christopher Skinner, known to friends as “Chris,” was described by those who knew him as a kind-hearted, loyal, and hardworking man. Born and raised in Gulfport, he was deeply rooted in his community and known for his big smile and even bigger heart.
“He was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back,” said longtime friend Marcus Neal. “He wasn’t involved in anything dangerous—he was just out enjoying the night like everyone else.”
Family members say Skinner had recently started a new job and was planning to move into his own place. He was proud of his progress and excited about the future.
“He was really turning a corner in his life,” said his sister, Trina Skinner. “He was making positive changes, working hard, and trying to live right. It’s devastating that his life was cut short like this.”
Investigation Ongoing, Police Seek Witnesses
Authorities have not released details on a motive or suspects, but confirm that the shooting is under active investigation. Surveillance footage from the area is being reviewed, and witnesses are being urged to come forward.
“This was a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of a young man who had so much more to live for,” said Gulfport Police Chief Chris Ryle. “We are working diligently to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Community in Shock and Mourning
The shooting has left Gulfport residents shaken, especially those who attended the Cinco de Mayo celebration. What was supposed to be an evening of culture, community, and fun turned into a painful reminder of how quickly joy can be stolen by violence.
A makeshift memorial has been set up outside the restaurant where the shooting occurred. Candles, flowers, and handwritten notes now mark the spot where Skinner was fatally shot.
“He didn’t deserve this,” said local resident Keisha Vaughn. “We’re tired of losing good people to gun violence. This has to stop.”
Remembering Christopher Skinner
As friends and family grieve, they are choosing to remember Christopher not for the tragic way he died, but for the generous and loving person he was in life. Plans are underway for a memorial service and candlelight vigil to honor his memory.
“He was a son, a brother, a friend—and now, a victim,” his mother said. “But he will not be forgotten.”
Christopher Skinner’s death is the latest in a troubling pattern of gun violence that has touched communities across the nation. As Gulfport continues to mourn, the call for peace, justice, and remembrance grows louder.
