BEDFORD, IOWA — The Bedford community is in mourning following the heartbreaking loss of Corbon Curphey, a fourth-grade student at Bedford Elementary School, who died as the result of a tragic accident earlier this past week.
The school confirmed Corbon’s death in a letter to families, written by PK–5 Principal Dana Nally, expressing sorrow and solidarity with the grieving Curphey family. “It is with deep sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that one of our students, Corbon Curphey, a 4th grader, has passed away,” Nally wrote. “Our hearts are with them and the entire Curphey family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Corbon is remembered not only as a beloved student but also as a cherished sibling to Carson, a sixth grader, and Connor, an eighth grader—both members of the Bedford school community. The loss has deeply affected classmates, staff, and neighbors alike.
As the tragedy occurred during the summer months, school officials are encouraging families to prioritize emotional support at home. The district has shared age-appropriate grief and loss resources to help parents and guardians navigate conversations with their children about this devastating event.
In the message to parents, Principal Nally emphasized the importance of staying connected. “Please know that we are here for you and your children,” she said. “If your family needs additional support, do not hesitate to reach out to me directly or contact our guidance counselor, Mrs. Strong.”
The school has not released additional details about the accident but is focused on supporting those affected by Corbon’s death.
In closing her message, Nally urged the community to “continue to hold Corbon, his family, and all those affected by this tragedy close in our thoughts and prayers.”
The Bedford Community School District has pledged ongoing support for the Curphey family and students returning to class in the fall. Grief counselors will be available as needed, and additional programming is expected to help young students cope with loss.
Corbon Curphey’s memory will be honored not only by his family but by the wider school community that loved him. As Bedford mourns the sudden loss of a young life filled with promise, the town unites in sorrow and remembrance.
