Authorities in Morrison County have identified the two individuals found deceased inside a Pierz apartment on Monday morning as John Gans, a teacher at Sauk Rapids‑Rice Middle School, and Crystal Marschel, his companion. Law enforcement officials believe the incident represents a murder–suicide.
According to the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a welfare check at approximately 10:30 a.m. at an apartment in the 600 block of River Valley Road. Upon arrival, they discovered both Gans and Marschel dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators believe Gans shot Marschel in the head before taking his own life.
Gans, whose family and students are in mourning, had served as a valued member of the Sauk Rapids‑Rice Middle School staff. Community members describe him as a committed educator and mentor.
Marschel, a devoted mother, leaves behind a daughter whose well-being is now at the forefront of this tragedy.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is assisting local authorities with the ongoing investigation. Officials emphasize that this appears to be an isolated, domestic incident and note that the public is not at risk.
Arrangements for visitation and memorial services have not yet been announced, though the sheriff’s office indicated details will be released as they become available.
This senseless event has stunned the Sauk Rapids and Pierz communities, leaving behind shock, grief, and a collective desire for healing and support for all affected.
