NASHVILLE, TN — A tragic accident in downtown Nashville has claimed the life of Dorothy Dobbins, a 77-year-old local resident, who was fatally struck by a vehicle driven by rising country music artist Conner Smith on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on June 8 along 3rd Avenue North near Van Buren Street, just blocks from where Dobbins resided. According to a statement released by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Dobbins was within a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado driven by 24-year-old Smith.

Dobbins was quickly transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities say preliminary findings indicate that Smith failed to yield the right of way to the pedestrian, which appears to be the contributing factor in the fatal collision. However, police confirmed that Smith showed no signs of impairment, was not distracted by his phone, and was released at the scene. No charges have been filed at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
The loss has deeply impacted the local community. Dobbins was a longtime Nashville resident, remembered by neighbors and friends as kind, independent, and deeply rooted in the fabric of her neighborhood.
Smith, best known for his hit single “Creek Will Rise,” has issued a statement through his attorney expressing his profound sorrow.
“Mr. Smith was involved in a car accident that tragically claimed a life,” his attorney said. “His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins’ family during this incredibly difficult time. He continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.”
Police say that a full investigative report may take several weeks, and any potential charges or updates will be determined based on the findings.
Meanwhile, family and friends of Dorothy Dobbins are mourning her unexpected loss and remembering her as a gentle, spirited woman who loved her city and community.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department urges any witnesses to come forward as they continue to piece together the events of that tragic evening.
