Family and friends mourn the loss of Kankakee residents; Kiyantis Riley, Philip Birdsong and Jeffrey Clark II who were killed in fiery Easter crash on South Cobb Boulevard

The Kankakee community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of three beloved residents—Kiyantis Riley, 45, Philip Birdsong, 48, and Jeffrey Clark II, 41—who tragically lost their lives in a fiery crash early Easter Sunday.

According to the Kankakee County Coroner’s Office (KCCO), the devastating accident occurred around 1:15 a.m. in the 900 block of South Cobb Boulevard. Preliminary findings reveal that a 2008 GMC Yukon carrying the three men veered off the roadway and struck a tree. The impact caused the SUV to burst into flames, fully engulfing the vehicle within minutes.

Emergency crews from the Kankakee Fire and Police Departments responded swiftly. Despite their heroic efforts to pull the occupants to safety, the intensity of the fire proved too overwhelming. Tragically, all three men succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

The loss of Kiyantis, Philip, and Jeffrey has sent shockwaves throughout Kankakee and beyond. Each man was deeply rooted in the community, known for their friendships, their families, and their contributions to the city they called home. Over Easter Sunday and into the following days, family members, friends, and neighbors gathered to remember the lives they lived and to support one another through the unimaginable grief.

“This is just devastating,” said a close family friend. “They were loved by so many. They had families, friends, and entire lives ahead of them still to live. Easter will never be the same for any of us.”

A makeshift memorial of flowers, candles, and heartfelt messages has since grown near the crash site, as the community struggles to come to terms with the tragedy. Many who stopped by spoke not only of the deep sadness they feel but also of the need to come together, to grieve as one, and to honor the memory of Kiyantis, Philip, and Jeffrey.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kankakee County Coroner’s Office, the Kankakee Police Department, and Illinois State Police Troop 5. Authorities have not yet released further details about what may have caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

In the meantime, families of the victims are remembering the men for the light they brought into their lives. Kiyantis Riley was remembered as a loving father and a dependable friend, Philip Birdsong as a kind-hearted soul with a quick smile, and Jeffrey Clark II as a fiercely loyal family man who could always be counted on.

“They were three strong, good men who will be missed more than words can express,” a family member shared. “Our hearts are broken, but their memories will live on.”

Funeral arrangements are being finalized, and the families ask for privacy as they navigate this incredibly painful time. Plans are also underway for a community vigil, where friends and residents can come together to honor and celebrate the lives of Kiyantis, Philip, and Jeffrey.

The Kankakee community continues to send its deepest condolences to the families, praying for healing, strength, and peace in the days ahead.
