HOMEWOOD, Ala. — Authorities have released further details following the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Jabari Latrell Peoples, an Aliceville resident, who was killed during an altercation with a Homewood police officer late Monday night.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. at the Homewood Soccer Park, located in the 1800 block of South Lakeshore Drive near Columbiana Road. The park was reportedly empty at the time except for the vehicle involved in the investigation.

According to Sgt. Mark Trippe of the Homewood Police Department, an officer was conducting a routine investigation into a suspicious vehicle parked at the location when the situation escalated. Officials say Peoples was inside the vehicle when a physical confrontation began between him and the officer. During the altercation, Peoples reportedly produced a firearm, prompting the officer to open fire.

Peoples was transported to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m., according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Per standard protocol, the shooting is now under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). The Homewood Police Department has not released the name of the officer involved, and it remains unclear whether any body camera footage exists.

As the SBI continues its inquiry, questions remain surrounding the events that led up to the fatal encounter. The incident has sparked concern within the community and calls for a transparent and thorough investigation.

More information is expected to be released as the state investigation progresses.
