Baton Rouge police are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of 25-year-old Prenesha Wagner and left multiple others injured in the early hours of Sunday morning. The shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. in the 3500 block of South Choctaw Drive, near the Acadian Thruway—an area frequently crowded on weekends with nightlife and late-night activity.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed Wagner’s identity Sunday afternoon. She was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck during a barrage of gunfire that erupted under still-unclear circumstances.
According to emergency officials, at least one other victim was transported by ambulance, while others are believed to have been driven to hospitals in private vehicles. However, the total number of victims and their conditions have not been officially released as of late Sunday.
Investigators are still working to piece together what led to the outbreak of violence. It is unclear whether the shooting occurred inside a venue, outside on the street, or in connection with a nearby gathering. No suspects have been identified, and authorities have not announced any arrests.
Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing evidence collected from the scene. They are urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything to come forward, noting that public cooperation will be vital in identifying those responsible.
This incident is the latest in a string of violent episodes to hit the city in recent months, intensifying concerns about public safety, particularly during weekend nights. Community leaders are once again calling for meaningful action to curb gun violence and hold perpetrators accountable.
The Baton Rouge Police Department and Crime Stoppers are asking anyone with information to contact them immediately. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
As the investigation continues, city officials are urging residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. More updates are expected in the coming days as authorities work to bring justice to Prenesha Wagner and others affected by the shooting.
