Gateway Elementary second-grade student named after horrific Friday incident at school drop-off zone

According to Borger Police Department in a media release on Friday, January 24, 2025, at approximately 8am today, Borger first responders were dispatched to a tragic accident that occurred in the designated school drop-off area at Gateway Elementary.

The accident resulted in the heartbreaking loss of a second-grade student’s life after their coat became caught in a vehicle door as they exited. Despite the presence of a senior school administrator who immediately attempted to intervene, the incident happened so quickly that it could not be stopped.

School officials and first responders attempted life-saving measures. Borger EMS transported the child to Golden Plains Community Hospital, where those measures continued. Unfortunately, the child succumbed to the injuries. Due to the child’s age and out of respect for the family, we are not releasing names.

Our hearts go out to all those affected by this horrible accident as they navigate this devastating loss. The entire community grieves alongside them.

At this time, we ask for understanding, patience, and compassion for all those affected. Please join us in keeping the family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
