Hillsborough Fatal Shooting: Armed Suspect at Large After Two People Shot; Schools Ordered Into Lockdown

HILLSBOROUGH TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A massive police response is underway in Somerset County after two people were shot Tuesday afternoon, prompting lockdowns across local schools as officers search for an armed suspect who remains on the run.

Authorities say the shooting occurred around 2 p.m. near 649 Route 206. Hillsborough Township Police and multiple assisting agencies rushed to the scene, where they discovered two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Their conditions have not yet been released.

Law enforcement officials immediately initiated a large-scale manhunt. As of Tuesday afternoon, the suspect had not been located.

“This is an active police scene,” confirmed Chief of Detectives Frank Roman Jr. of the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, stressing that investigators are still piecing together what led to the gunfire.

Out of caution, all Hillsborough Township schools were placed into a secure hold—commonly referred to as a lockdown—while officers canvassed the area and urged residents to remain indoors.

Police issued a public advisory urging residents to “use caution and lock your doors” as the search continues. No suspect description has been released, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact law enforcement immediately.

This remains a developing situation. More details will be provided as they become available.
