MORAN, KS – The community of Moran is mourning the tragic loss of 44-year-old Scott Welch, who was fatally struck in a devastating double crash on U.S. Highway 54 in Allen County on the evening of Wednesday, March 13, 2025.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), the fatal incident unfolded around 8 p.m. when a Ford truck, traveling east on U54 while hauling a large bale of hay, had its taillights obscured. A Chevy truck following behind was unable to see the Ford clearly and rear-ended it, causing the Ford to spin counter-clockwise, overturn, and veer into a ditch. The impact ejected Welch, the driver of the Ford, onto the westbound lanes of the highway.
Authorities report that Welch suffered serious injuries from the initial collision. The driver of the Chevy truck did not appear to be injured.
Tragically, just minutes later, an SUV traveling west on U54 struck Welch, who was still on the roadway from the previous crash. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Welch was pronounced dead at the scene.
The heartbreaking accident has left the Moran community reeling as family, friends, and loved ones remember Welch as a hardworking and kind-hearted individual. His sudden passing serves as a solemn reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of road safety.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days as loved ones prepare to honor and celebrate the life of Scott Welch. The community has been urged to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
