Jocey Tackett Obituary Obituary: Waverly City School mourn the loss of “bright, beautiful and talented young” student Jocey Tackett

Waverly, Ohio — The Waverly City School District and local community are grieving the heartbreaking loss of 17-year-old Jocey Tackett, a beloved high school student remembered for her bright spirit, kind heart, and vibrant personality. Jocey passed away following a courageous battle with severe illness that included Flu A, pneumonia, and sepsis.

Her passing marks a devastating moment for the Waverly school community, where Jocey was known not only as a dedicated student, but also as a friend, classmate, and inspiration to many. Described by the district as “bright, beautiful, and talented,” Jocey’s warmth and character left an unforgettable impression on everyone she met.

In a statement issued by Waverly City Schools, officials expressed their deepest sympathies:

“We are saddened by the passing of our student Jocey Tackett. Our thoughts and condolences are with her family and all who were her friends. This is a very devastating and delicate situation, so out of respect and love for the family, we did not want to release any information that might conflict with the family’s wishes during this difficult time.”

Jocey’s journey took a tragic turn on February 11th, after only a few days of mild symptoms. In a matter of hours, her condition rapidly deteriorated, and she was rushed from her local hospital to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, where she was placed on life support. Despite the tireless efforts of medical staff and the outpouring of prayers and support from the community, Jocey passed away after more than two weeks in critical condition.

Her grandmother, who shared updates on Jocey’s battle, had previously asked the community for prayers and hope. “Please pray with us for the miracle that Jocey needs,” she wrote in an emotional plea that touched hearts across Waverly and beyond.

In response to the loss, the school district is taking steps to support grieving students and staff. On Thursday, April 17th, school counselors will be available in the High School Auditorium from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. for any students seeking support. When classes resume on Monday, April 21st, school leaders will gather with the high school student body in the auditorium to provide space for shared remembrance and healing. Counselors will continue to be present throughout the week.

“Please continue to send healing thoughts to the family and friends as they try to navigate through this heartbreaking loss,” the district added.

Jocey’s passing is a reminder of both the fragility of life and the incredible strength of community. She will be remembered not only for the light she brought into the lives of those around her, but for the bravery with which she fought her illness.

The Tackett family is asking for privacy as they mourn their daughter and granddaughter, whose memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.

Information regarding memorial services will be shared at a later time. In the meantime, the community is encouraged to continue offering support to the family and one another during this time of sorrow.
