The community of Beaufort is reeling from the tragic loss of Juan Tahual-Lopez, a 43-year-old father of four daughters, who was killed in a devastating six-vehicle crash in Bluffton, South Carolina, on Monday, May 19, 2025. The fatal accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. at the busy intersection of U.S. Highway 278 and White Oak Circle.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the chain-reaction collision began when a westbound Ford pickup truck struck two vehicles before crossing the center line and colliding with two additional vehicles. One of those vehicles then hit a 2006 Chevy pickup truck driven by Tahual-Lopez. He died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. Three others were injured and transported to nearby hospitals.
Responding units arrived to find multiple heavily damaged vehicles blocking the roadway and several travel lanes. Bluffton Township Fire District Deputy Chief Adam Corn, who oversaw emergency operations, described the scene as chaotic and emotionally challenging for all involved.
“This was a difficult incident for everyone involved,” said Corn. “Our crews, along with our partners in EMS and law enforcement, responded with care, coordination, and professionalism under very difficult circumstances. We’re grateful for the strong relationships among our public safety teams, and we extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected.”
A Beloved Father and Devoted Provider
Juan Tahual-Lopez was more than just a victim in this heartbreaking crash—he was a beloved member of the Beaufort community and, above all, a devoted father to his four daughters. Originally from Guatemala, Juan came to the U.S. in pursuit of a better future for his family. Friends describe him as a hard-working, humble man who lived for his children and gave selflessly to ensure their happiness and success.
“He was always smiling,” said one neighbor. “You’d see him playing in the yard with his girls after work, or driving them to school. He never complained—he just worked hard and loved even harder.”
A skilled tradesman, Juan was known for his reliability and warm spirit. He had a reputation for lending a hand to anyone in need, whether it was helping a neighbor fix a broken fence or offering a ride to someone without one. His quiet generosity and unwavering devotion to his family made him deeply admired by those who knew him.
A Grieving Family and Community
Juan’s sudden death has left his family and friends heartbroken, particularly his daughters, who now face an unimaginable loss. Community members have begun organizing support efforts, including fundraisers to assist the family with funeral expenses and long-term care for his children.
