WATERMAN, IL — A woman from Waterman has tragically died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle rollover crash that occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 1. Authorities have identified the victim as 77-year-old Kayla Ford, who was pronounced dead at a Rockford hospital following emergency treatment.
According to a release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred just before 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and Rimsnider Road, a rural stretch of highway located southwest of Waterman. Initial reports indicate that Ford was traveling alone when her vehicle veered off the roadway and overturned in the early morning darkness.
Emergency responders from the Hinckley Fire Department were first on the scene and worked to extricate Ford from the wreckage. She was critically injured and immediately transported to a nearby medical facility in Rockford, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash, and investigations are ongoing. Both the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office are continuing to examine the circumstances leading up to the incident, including whether road conditions, mechanical issues, or a medical emergency may have played a role.
A Community in Mourning
The news of Kayla Ford’s death has shaken the Waterman community, where she was a longtime resident. Known for her warm personality and active involvement in local events, Ford was respected and loved by many who knew her.
“She was the kind of person who always had a kind word and a helping hand,” one neighbor shared. “This is a devastating loss for our small town.”
Though retired, Ford had remained engaged in her community and with friends and family. As loved ones grieve her sudden passing, many have taken to social media and local forums to express their condolences and share fond memories of a life well-lived.
Safety Reminder
The fatal crash serves as a sobering reminder of the risks drivers face, especially during nighttime travel on rural roads. With limited visibility, unexpected road conditions, and fatigue often contributing to late-night accidents, authorities are reminding drivers to remain cautious and alert—especially when traveling alone or in isolated areas.
As the investigation into the crash continues, officials are expected to release further details in the coming days. Funeral arrangements for Kayla Ford are pending and will be announced by the family at a later date.
