MASON COUNTY, MI – The Mason County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the identity of a teenager killed in a tragic off-road vehicle (ORV) crash last week in Logan Township. Authorities say 16-year-old Kieara Stockwell, a student at Ludington High School, died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident on Wednesday evening, June 4.
According to a press release issued by Sheriff Kim Cole on Monday, the crash occurred around 7:37 p.m. on a trail south of Barothy Road. Responding deputies and emergency crews found two 16-year-old girls, both from Ludington, at the scene. One was critically injured and airlifted by Aero Med to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. Stockwell was later confirmed as the critically injured victim, and she succumbed to her injuries.
Preliminary findings from the Mason County Crash Reconstruction Team indicate that Kieara was operating a 2017 Honda Rancher 420 when the vehicle veered off the trail and rolled over, pinning her beneath it. The crash remains under investigation.
Kieara Stockwell was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, aunt, niece, and friend. Her family describes her as vibrant and full of life, with a deep love for animals, dirt biking, music, and spending quality time with loved ones. She was especially devoted to her young niece and cherished moments at her older brother’s home. Known for her radiant personality and infectious spirit, Kieara left a lasting impression on everyone who met her.
Her tragic death follows the earlier loss of her older sister, Kassie, with whom she is now reunited, her family says.
In a heartfelt tribute, loved ones wrote, “She always lived life to the fullest and never took a second for granted. We will make sure she has a place here on earth where we can always feel close to her.”
Grief counselors and support services are being offered to students and staff at Ludington High School as the community mourns the loss of a vibrant young life taken far too soon.
