LAIE, HAWAIʻI — The Brigham Young University–Hawaiʻi community is mourning the unexpected death of Lachlan McQuivey, a freshman student from Massachusetts whose passing has left classmates, faculty, and loved ones heartbroken.
University President John S. K. Kauwe III announced the tragic news in a statement addressed to the BYU–Hawaiʻi ʻohana, extending heartfelt condolences to Lachlan’s family, friends, and all those impacted by his sudden loss.
“It is with deep sadness that I share with you the tragic loss of Lachlan McQuivey,” President Kauwe wrote. “We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones as they cope with this loss.”
McQuivey, who had just begun his academic journey at BYU–Hawaiʻi, was remembered by those who knew him as a bright, kind, and dedicated young man. His presence on campus was already deeply felt, and his absence will leave a lasting void in the hearts of his peers and the greater university community.
According to reports, Lachlan died by suicide.
President Kauwe also offered spiritual reassurance to the campus community during this time of mourning. “Losing a fellow student and member of our university ʻohana is very difficult. During these difficult times, I rely on the Savior’s promise, ‘I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.’”
He expressed comfort and gratitude for the outpouring of support already shown by students and staff, highlighting the sense of unity and compassion that has been evident in the wake of the loss. “I was comforted to see our students and employees act with grace and love as they mourned together last night. We will continue to love and support each other as we move forward.”
