Lake Charles, La. – Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal weekend shooting at the Lake Charles Seawall as Trakeyvan Dejay Handy, a 26-year-old local resident.
According to Lake Charles Police Department Deputy Chief Kevin Kirkum, officers responded to a call around 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, and discovered Handy deceased from an apparent gunshot wound near the Lake Charles Event Center.
As of Monday, the investigation remains in its early stages. Police have not yet released information regarding potential suspects or arrests, but they are actively working leads.
Speaking to the media, LCPD Chief Shawn Caldwell emphasized that there is currently no evidence to suggest an ongoing threat to the public. “This appears to have stemmed from an isolated argument involving a small group of individuals,” Caldwell said. “We are treating it as a targeted incident.”
Authorities have not disclosed what led to the confrontation, and no motive has been officially confirmed.
The Lake Charles Police Department is urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the department’s tip line or Crime Stoppers.
