MADISON, WI — The University of Wisconsin–Madison, the nursing community, and colleagues nationwide are mourning the sudden loss of Dr. Linda D. Scott, who passed away today at age 69. Dr. Scott, a distinguished nurse, educator, and leader, profoundly influenced nursing education, research, and health policy throughout her career, leaving a lasting legacy on countless patients and practitioners.

Dr. Scott served as the eighth dean of the UW–Madison School of Nursing from 2016 to 2025. During her tenure, she elevated the school’s academic reputation, expanded research initiatives, created new pathways for students, and championed programs that supported faculty and staff. Known for her clarity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to excellence, Dr. Scott exemplified the power of nursing to transform communities.
Her influence extended beyond the university. As Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Nursing, she advocated for workforce well-being, health equity, and the integration of research into clinical practice. Colleagues remember her as a mentor, visionary, and courageous advocate whose work shaped both the profession and the lives of those it serves.
