Cullman County, AL — A devastating boating accident on Smith Lake early Wednesday morning has left two people dead and several others potentially injured, authorities have confirmed.
The collision occurred around 7 a.m. near Burr’s Island, just outside the mouth of Miller Bottoms, as reported by the Cullman County Emergency Management Agency (EMA). Officials say the crash involved a Major League Fishing (MLF) competitor, who was allegedly blinded by dense fog and inadvertently collided with a professional guide boat.
The Cullman County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released. Authorities also reported additional injuries, but the total number and extent remain unclear. At least one medical helicopter was dispatched to the area to aid in emergency transport.
The accident took place during Day 2 of the Major League Fishing Tackle Warehouse Invitational, a nationally recognized professional fishing tournament. It remains unknown how many vessels were involved in the crash or whether other tournament participants were affected.
Multiple agencies responded to the emergency, including the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), which is now leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Cullman County EMA and other emergency personnel remain on site managing the aftermath and coordinating with tournament officials.
In a statement released Wednesday, MLF spokesperson Joe Opager acknowledged the tragedy:
“Out of respect for those involved, and to ensure the accuracy of all information, no further details will be released at this time. MLF is working closely with law enforcement and emergency officials. Additional updates will be provided as they are confirmed by the appropriate authorities. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest concern are with everyone affected by this tragic incident.”
Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues. The crash has cast a somber tone over the high-profile tournament and raised concerns about the challenges of navigating early morning lake conditions.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
