PLAINFIELD, ILLINOIS – The community of Plainfield and the greater Joliet area is mourning the heartbreaking and untimely loss of Mason Smolik, an 18-year-old whose bright future was tragically cut short in a fatal car accident on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in Joliet Township.
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the 17300 block of New Lenox Road. Mason was driving a Honda sedan when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the opposite lane, and slid off the roadway. His car struck a large, unoccupied piece of construction equipment parked near a construction zone.
Mason was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries. The Will County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his identity. Authorities continue to investigate the accident.
