Matt Kerhin Obituary – Suicide: In loving memory of Hartford Union High School District Teacher, Matt Kerhin

Hartford police launched an investigation into a local high school teacher before he died by suicide on Thursday.

The teacher, Matt Kerhin, called 911 and then took his own life as a Washington County deputy arrived at his home in Hubertus.

Kerhin, a technical education teacher specializing in auto mechanics at Hartford Union High School for the past three years, had previously taught for 11 years at West Allis Central. He was also an Air Force veteran and a father of three.

Authorities confirmed that Kerhin left the school during the day on Thursday. Later, he contacted 911 from his home, requesting someone be sent to his residence. When a deputy arrived three minutes later, Kerhin fatally shot himself in the front yard.

On Friday, Hartford police confirmed that Kerhin was under investigation, the case did not involve allegations of sexual or physical abuse.

Hartford Union High School District Superintendent Jeffrey Walters addressed families in a statement, acknowledging the emotional impact of the loss and assuring that counseling support was available for students and staff. In a separate statement, Walters emphasized that neither students nor staff were in danger and that Kerhin had not been arrested.

Kerhin’s former wife described him as a dedicated and compassionate teacher who prioritized his students and was deeply committed to improving the tech education program.

Hartford police declined to disclose details of their investigation, stating that it remains ongoing. Due to a Washington County deputy being present at the time of the incident, the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the death investigation.
