Michael Oxley, suspect in Friday night shooting of local barber George Ramirez III fatally shot by Chico Police

CHICO, CA – The Butte County District Attorney’s Office and the Butte County Officer-Involved Shooting Protocol Team are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting by Chico Police early Sunday morning.

Suspect Killed in SWAT Operation

The shooting took place at The Post, an off-campus student housing complex on Nord Avenue, where 43-year-old Michael Oxley was staying as an Airbnb resident. Oxley was identified as the suspect in a Friday night shooting that left a local barber critically injured.

Members of the Chico Police SWAT team confronted Oxley at the complex, leading to an exchange that resulted in his death. Six officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, as per standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

Friday Night Shooting of Local Barber

Authorities say the sequence of events began on Friday evening when Oxley allegedly shot 43-year-old George Ramirez III, a well-known barber in downtown Chico. The attack occurred in the Farmer’s Market parking lot on Flume Street, where Ramirez was sitting in his vehicle.

According to District Attorney Mike Ramsey, a suspect approached from behind and fired multiple shots through the driver’s side window, striking Ramirez in the head, neck, and shoulder. The victim was rushed to an out-of-area hospital for emergency surgery and remains in critical condition.

Investigation Continues

Authorities have not yet disclosed additional details regarding the confrontation between SWAT officers and Oxley at The Post. The investigation remains ongoing, and further updates are expected as officials review the circumstances surrounding both shootings.
