Northwest Indiana Mourns Loss of Dr. Nazal Obaid, Beloved Community Leader

CROWN POINT, IN — The Northwest Indiana community is mourning the passing of Dr. Nazal Obaid, a cherished member of the Northwest Indiana Islamic Center and a respected pillar of the Crown Point community. His sudden departure leaves family, friends, and the broader community in deep sorrow.

Dr. Obaid was a devoted husband to Suad Obaid and a loving father to Lena (Dr. Kais Yehyawi), Reema (Stephen Ross), Kenan, and Omar (Stacy Obaid). His devotion extended to his grandchildren — Layth, Dalia, Jenna, and Jad, children of Lena, and Adam and Yasmeen, children of Reema — who were a source of great joy in his life. Family members remember him as a patient, guiding, and affectionate presence, always offering wisdom, encouragement, and support. He is also survived by his siblings, Saleh and Khadija.

Beyond his family, Dr. Obaid made lasting contributions to the community. As a respected member of the Northwest Indiana Islamic Center, he dedicated himself to fostering community connections, supporting charitable causes, and exemplifying the values of faith, compassion, and integrity. Friends and neighbors recall his generosity, wise counsel, and readiness to help anyone in need.

Dr. Obaid’s life was defined by humility, service, and faith. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion that continues to inspire those who knew him, touching lives through both his personal relationships and his community work.

The Janazah prayer for Dr. Obaid will be held Tuesday, December 9, at the Northwest Indiana Islamic Center, 9803 Colorado St, Crown Point, following Duhr prayer at 1 p.m. Burial will take place at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. The Obaid family will receive condolences at the Islamic Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Crown Point and Northwest Indiana community remember Dr. Nazal Obaid as a man of integrity, faith, and compassion, whose impact will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.
