The University of Oklahoma community and countless others are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Patrick Fletcher, a former Sooners quarterback who played for OU from 1998 to 2000. Fletcher passed away recently, leaving behind a powerful legacy defined by passion, character, and an unwavering love for the game of football.
Patrick’s journey in the sport began long before his collegiate days. In 1985, he served as a ball boy—a role that introduced him to the game and began a lifelong connection with Oklahoma football. Even then, those around him saw the spark that would carry him through years of dedication and hard work to eventually stand on the field as a quarterback for the Sooners.

From 1998 to 2000, Fletcher wore the crimson and cream with pride, leading his team with determination and representing the university with honor. While he may not have always been in the spotlight, those who knew Patrick understood the immeasurable value he brought to the team—not only with his athletic ability, but with his leadership, humility, and uplifting spirit.
More than a teammate, Patrick Fletcher was a brother in the truest sense of the word. A member of the tight-knit fraternity of OU quarterbacks, he was revered for his infectious smile, deep loyalty, and positive energy that could light up any room. Whether in the huddle or the locker room, Fletcher had a way of making everyone around him feel supported, inspired, and seen.
A close friend, who had known Patrick since his days as a ball boy, shared heartfelt words:
“He was more than a friend—he was family. We never played together on the field, but our bond was real, built on years of laughter, encouragement, and shared love for the game. Patrick was a light in this world, and he made us all better—on and off the field.”
Fletcher’s impact extended far beyond football. He was a compassionate soul, a pillar of support for his friends, and a source of strength for those who knew him during life’s highs and lows. He gave freely of his time, his smile, and his heart.
His passing leaves an unfillable void for his family, former teammates, friends, and the broader University of Oklahoma community. In this time of sorrow, they are holding on tightly to the memories and the profound influence Patrick had in their lives.
To Patrick’s family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. May you find comfort in knowing how deeply he was loved and how many lives he touched.
Though he may be gone from this world, Patrick Fletcher’s spirit will continue to live on—in every huddle, every cheer from the stands, and every story shared by those lucky enough to have known him.
