A routine welfare check in Fairbanks, Alaska, took a tragic turn when a woman discovered the lifeless body of a young boy in an apartment, while his mother and younger sister were missing.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on Friday, February 7, leaving both authorities and the community in shock over what police have described as an “unimaginable” loss.
The Fairbanks Police Department (FPD) was called to the home of 36-year-old Heather Alexie after receiving a report of a suspicious death. The caller, a woman who had not heard from Heather, a client of hers, for some time, went to check on her and her two children. Upon entering the apartment, she made a grim discovery—the body of 6-year-old Peter Alexie.
Investigators determined that Peter had been the victim of a homicide. Meanwhile, Heather and her 5-year-old daughter, Renee Alexie, were missing, prompting the FPD to issue a “Missing Persons/Suspicious Circumstances” alert, asking for the public’s help in locating them.
Through community tips and tracking Heather’s phone, authorities traced her location to the Anchorage area. With the help of the Anchorage Police Department (APD), Heather and Renee were found by Saturday evening. Both were unharmed, but as the investigation progressed, Heather became a suspect in her son’s death.
During an interview with APD homicide detectives, Heather admitted to causing injuries that led to Peter’s death before traveling to Anchorage with her daughter days later. She was arrested on charges of second-degree murder, and Renee was placed in state custody. Police confirmed that the young girl is safe.
FPD Chief Ron Dupee called the case “incredibly tragic and heartbreaking,” acknowledging the emotional toll on officers, detectives, and the community. “The death of a child is always devastating, and our hearts go out to Peter’s loved ones and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss,” he said. “We want to assure the public that we are committed to seeking justice for Peter.”
While the community seeks answers, authorities have stated that details will be released as the investigation continues. “We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we work through these complex situations,” police said.
