Retired Southampton Police officer Edward Crohan fatally shot wife Stephanie Crohan, before taking own life in Jamesport incident

JAMESPORT, NY (June 12, 2025) — A quiet Long Island community is reeling after a tragic murder-suicide in Jamesport on Wednesday night involving a retired law enforcement officer and his wife.

Suffolk County Police confirmed that 62-year-old Edward Crohan, a retired officer with the Southampton Police Department, fatally shot his wife, 63-year-old Stephanie Crohan, before turning the gun on himself. Officers responded to a welfare check around 8:30 p.m. at the couple’s residence on Lagoon Court, where they discovered both deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

According to public pension records, Edward Crohan served with the Southampton Police Department before his retirement. His wife, Stephanie Crohan, was also a public service retiree, having worked for Suffolk County. She was a beneficiary of the New York State Police and Fire Retirement System.

The incident remains under investigation, though police have not yet disclosed a motive. The Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Squad is leading the inquiry and is urging anyone with information to contact them at 631-852-6392.

Neighbors described the Crohans as a quiet, longtime couple, and the news has left many in shock. No prior domestic disturbance calls at the address have been reported.

This latest case of domestic violence adds to a growing list of tragic incidents involving retired public servants, prompting renewed discussions about post-retirement mental health and support systems.

Counseling and victim support resources are being made available to affected community members through Suffolk County services.
