PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The North Allegheny School District is grieving the sudden and unexpected passing of longtime teacher and basketball coach Robert “Rob” Greenleaf, who died on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the age of 58.

Greenleaf, a respected educator and passionate coach, was a fixture in Pittsburgh’s academic and athletic communities. He spent much of his career teaching at North Allegheny High School, where he was known not only for his dedication in the classroom but also for his lasting impact on students and athletes alike.
A Murrysville native, Greenleaf graduated from Franklin Regional High School, where he was a standout varsity basketball player. He went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh, earning both a bachelor’s degree and an MBA while also serving as a student manager for the Panthers basketball team. His love for the game followed him throughout his life.
Greenleaf’s coaching résumé included roles at several high schools and colleges, including a tenure as an assistant basketball coach at La Roche College. One of the defining moments of his coaching career came in 1997, when he led his alma mater, Franklin Regional, to a state championship appearance — a crowning achievement that still resonates with players and fans to this day.
“Rob was more than a coach — he was a mentor, a teacher, and a friend to so many,” said a former colleague. “His impact on the court and in the classroom was immeasurable. He believed in his students and players, and they believed in him.”
Greenleaf is survived by his mother, Barbara Greenleaf of Murrysville; his aunts Bonnie (Tony) Mack and Alice Jane Serra; as well as several cousins. He is remembered as a devoted family member and loyal friend who brought a deep sense of integrity and compassion to everything he did.
Visitation will be held at Hart Funeral Home Inc. in Murrysville on Saturday, June 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., and again on Sunday, June 8, from 2 to 6 p.m. A Service of Christian Burial will take place at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Murrysville on Monday, June 9, at 11 a.m. (guests are asked to meet directly at the church). Interment will follow at Penn Lincoln Memorial Park in Irwin.
As North Allegheny and the wider Pittsburgh community reflect on his legacy, Rob Greenleaf is remembered not only for his coaching achievements, but for the countless lives he touched through teaching, mentorship, and quiet, steadfast leadership.
