The Mapleton, Iowa, community is mourning the loss of Rosemary Barber, 75, who was killed in a motor vehicle collision Thursday evening in Monona County.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred around 7:41 p.m. at the intersection of 130th Street and Walnut Avenue, approximately five miles east of Mapleton. Authorities reported that Mrs. Barber was driving a 2013 Ford Escape eastbound when she attempted to turn around to travel westbound. During the maneuver, her vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by an eastbound 2018 GMC Sierra.
Investigators noted that dense fog was present at the time of the crash and is believed to have played a role in the incident.
Mrs. Barber was transported by Monona County Emergency Medical Services to Burgess Hospital in Onawa with serious injuries. Despite medical intervention, she later died at the hospital.
The driver of the GMC Sierra, 31-year-old Cody Clausen of Schleswig, along with a passenger in the vehicle, were not seriously injured.

The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol, with assistance from the Monona County Sheriff’s Office, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mapleton Fire Department.
