The law enforcement community is mourning the loss of RPD Stark, a highly decorated police dog who served with West Midlands Police and whose courage in the line of duty left a lasting legacy. Stark, the recipient of the 2021 Thin Blue Paw Outstanding Bravery Award, passed away on December 7, 2025, following a short illness. He died peacefully in the arms of his handler, bringing a quiet and emotional end to a remarkable life of service.

RPD Stark became widely known for his extraordinary bravery after being seriously injured during an incident in 2020, when he was attacked with a machete while carrying out his duties. The incident shocked many and highlighted the very real dangers faced not only by police officers but also by the service animals who work alongside them. Despite his injuries, Stark’s resilience and unwavering spirit came to symbolize courage, loyalty, and sacrifice.
In recognition of his actions and determination, Stark was awarded the Thin Blue Paw Outstanding Bravery Award in 2021. The honor acknowledged not only his heroism during the machete attack but also his broader contribution to policing and public safety throughout his career with West Midlands Police. Tributes at the time described him as fearless, devoted, and utterly committed to protecting both his handler and the public.
Stark retired earlier this year after years of dedicated service. During his retirement, he continued to receive support from the Foundation, which provided him with vital hydrotherapy sessions to aid his recovery and ongoing wellbeing. Those close to him said the care he received allowed him to enjoy comfort and dignity in his later months, surrounded by the people who loved him most.
His passing has been felt deeply by everyone connected to the Foundation and the wider policing community. In a statement, the Foundation described Stark as a dog who gave everything in service and asked nothing in return, noting that he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Particular thoughts have been extended to Stark’s handler, Paul, as well as Michelle and all who loved and adored him. The bond between Stark and his handler was described as unbreakable, forged through years of trust, teamwork, and shared danger. That bond was evident until the very end, as Stark passed away in the arms of the person who stood beside him throughout his career.
As tributes continue to pour in, many have reflected on Stark’s legacy as more than just a police dog. He is remembered as a symbol of bravery, loyalty, and the often-unseen sacrifices made by service animals in the line of duty.
RPD Stark is now being honored with words often reserved for the most dedicated of servants: you may now stand down. His watch is over, but his impact will not be forgotten.
