The Tyler Police Department and the entire Tyler community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of one of their own. Officer Sam Lively, a dedicated and courageous young officer, passed away following an off-duty motorcycle crash on April 25th, 2025. He was only at the beginning of what promised to be an extraordinary career in law enforcement, and his passing leaves a deep void among his family, friends, and the community he had so eagerly set out to serve.
Around 6:00 p.m. on that tragic evening, Tyler Police responded to a serious traffic crash on Troup Highway, just north of Loop 323. The investigation revealed that Officer Lively was riding his motorcycle southbound in the outside lane of Troup Highway. Another vehicle, traveling south in the inside lane, attempted to change lanes and collided with Officer Lively’s motorcycle. Emergency medical personnel quickly arrived and transported him to a local hospital. Despite their best efforts, Sam Lively succumbed to his injuries.
Officer Lively was not just a public servant; he was a beacon of hope, strength, and dedication. A recent graduate of the police academy, he had successfully completed his field training and was just beginning what would have been a promising and impactful career with the Tyler Police Department. Known for his compassionate spirit, sharp mind, and deep commitment to justice, Officer Lively embodied the very best qualities of a law enforcement officer.
“Officer Lively was an amazing young man who wanted nothing more than to serve the Tyler community,” the department said in a heartfelt statement. “He will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and fellow officers.”
