Hood River, OR — The Hood River community is mourning the sudden and unexpected loss of longtime educator Scott Rumsey, who passed away on June 2, 2025. Known affectionately by many as “Scottie Skittles,” Rumsey was a beloved teacher, mentor, husband, father, grandfather, and a cornerstone of early childhood education in the region.

For more than three decades, Rumsey helped shape the minds and hearts of young learners at Bright Beginnings School, where he worked side by side with his wife, Billie. Together, they co-created an early elementary program that earned admiration for its joyful, imaginative, and character-building approach to education. Known for fostering learning through curiosity, creativity, and play, their work left a lasting mark on generations of students and families.
“Scott wasn’t just a teacher—he was a spark,” said one former colleague. “He made learning feel like magic. Every child felt seen, valued, and inspired in his classroom.”
Those who knew Rumsey describe him as a person who radiated warmth and authenticity. His signature smile and twinkle in his eye were as familiar to students as the sense of wonder he brought into every lesson.
The news of his passing has left the community stunned. Tributes have poured in from former students, parents, and fellow educators, all reflecting on the powerful impact Rumsey had on their lives.
In a time of deep grief, his legacy remains firmly rooted in the hearts of those he touched. Whether through storytelling, songs, or simply the way he made each child feel special, Scott Rumsey helped create not just a school—but a magical place where learning and love went hand in hand.
He is survived by his wife Billie, their children and grandchildren, and an extended family of students and friends who will carry forward the spirit he brought to everything he did.
