Sharon Torres Car Accident: Driver Killed After Striking Troopers During Traffic Stop in Cairo

Authorities have identified the woman killed in a tragic Monday evening crash in Cairo as 69-year-old Sharon Torres, who died after her vehicle struck two New York State troopers during an active traffic stop.

The incident occurred around 5:23 p.m. on November 17, 2025, along State Route 23. According to New York State Police, two troopers from the Catskill barracks had pulled over a vehicle and were standing outside their patrol unit when a second vehicle—driven by Torres—approached from behind and collided with the patrol car.

Torres was pronounced dead at the scene despite immediate emergency efforts. The two troopers suffered injuries in the impact but are expected to recover.

State Police investigators spent several hours at the scene, examining the vehicles and documenting road conditions as they work to determine what led to the collision. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether speed, distraction, or other factors may have contributed.

Traffic along Route 23 was slowed and partially shut down as first responders and crash reconstruction teams processed the area.

Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact New York State Police.

The incident underscores the persistent dangers faced by law enforcement officers during roadside stops and serves as a reminder for drivers to use extreme caution when approaching emergency vehicles.
