STATESVILLE, NC — A community is grieving, and a family is left shattered following a tragic shooting that claimed the life of 51-year-old Surtonia Burton on Saturday, August 2, 2025. The Statesville Police Department is now actively searching for 26-year-old Titeon Breshaun Burton, who has been identified as the primary suspect in the fatal incident.
The shooting occurred in the 1000 block of Fifth Street just after 7:00 p.m., prompting a swift response from police and emergency medical personnel. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Surtonia Burton suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was quickly transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital, where doctors fought to save her life. Despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead a short time later due to the severity of her injuries.
Authorities confirmed Sunday morning that the suspect, Titeon Breshaun Burton, is believed to be known to the victim. While officials have not publicly stated the nature of their relationship, sources familiar with the case say the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic or familial dispute that turned deadly.
The Statesville Police Department has issued a warrant for Titeon Burton’s arrest on charges of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is considered armed and dangerous, and law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward immediately.
“This is a heartbreaking and senseless tragedy,” said Statesville Police Chief David Onley in a statement released Sunday. “We are working tirelessly to apprehend the suspect and deliver justice for Surtonia and her family. We urge the public to remain vigilant and to contact us with any information that may assist in this investigation.”
Community in Mourning
Surtonia Burton was well known in her neighborhood, described by friends and neighbors as a kind, resilient woman with a nurturing heart and strong ties to the community. She was a mother, a grandmother, and a friend to many—often seen volunteering at local events, lending a helping hand to neighbors, or simply enjoying a conversation on her front porch.
“She was the kind of person who brought people together,” said family friend Charlene Montgomery. “This loss is devastating—not just to her family, but to everyone who knew her. We’re in disbelief.”
Neighbors reported hearing several gunshots that evening, followed by screams and a flurry of flashing lights as first responders arrived on the scene. The incident has left residents shaken, especially as questions swirl about how and why the violence unfolded.
“She didn’t deserve this,” one neighbor said tearfully. “She was a pillar on this street. It’s scary to think that something like this could happen so close to home.”
Police Appeal for Public Assistance
As of Sunday evening, authorities have launched a multi-agency search for Titeon Burton. He is described as a 26-year-old Black male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a medium build and short black hair. Police believe he may still be in the area or attempting to flee the region. Surveillance footage is being reviewed, and officers are following up on leads.
Citizens are urged not to approach the suspect if seen, but instead to call 911 or submit tips to the Statesville Police Department or Iredell County Crime Stoppers. Anonymous tips are also being accepted through the police department’s official tip line.
“This man is dangerous, and we need the community’s help to bring him in safely,” Chief Onley emphasized. “We will not rest until he is in custody and facing the full weight of the law.”
A Life Remembered
A candlelight vigil is being planned in the coming days to honor the life of Surtonia Burton. Friends, family members, and community leaders will gather not only to remember her life but also to call for an end to the violence that continues to claim innocent lives across the city.
“She was strong. She was loving. She was trying to live her life in peace,” said her daughter in an emotional statement. “And now she’s gone because of something so senseless. We just want justice.”
