The Bellville Police Department is grieving the loss of one of its officers.
In a social media post on Monday, the department announced that Officer Summer Kennard tragically lost her life in a crash that occurred on February 3, 2025.
“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Officer Summer Kennard. She was an outstanding officer, and her loss is deeply felt by our department. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. She will always remain in our hearts and minds,” the statement read.
The Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) is currently investigating the crash.
According to OSHP, the accident occurred just after 5:30 a.m. on U.S. 42 in Gilead Township. Officer Kennard was driving a 2010 Toyota RAV4 eastbound when the vehicle veered off the right side of the road. After overcorrecting, the car crossed the center line and was struck by a westbound 2013 Ford F-150.
Emergency responders transported Officer Kennard to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
