SHELLEY, Idaho — Authorities say a man is dead following an officer-involved shooting late Tuesday night in rural Bingham County.
According to a joint statement from the Bingham and Bonneville County Sheriff’s Offices, deputies and officers from multiple agencies responded around 11 p.m. to reports of gunfire near 1300 East and 1100 North, east of Shelley. The incident began when a homeowner confronted a suspect allegedly attempting to steal a four-wheeler from his property.
An exchange of gunfire left both the suspect and homeowner wounded, officials said. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.
Law enforcement quickly established a perimeter and located the injured suspect in a nearby field. During the encounter, deputies from both counties fired shots. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, the suspect died at the scene.
The homeowner was transported by ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls with injuries described as non-life-threatening. No officers were injured.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including deputies from Bingham and Bonneville counties, Shelley and Blackfoot police, Idaho State Police, and emergency medical crews.
The East Idaho Critical Incident Team, led by the Pocatello Police Department with assistance from Idaho Falls Police and Idaho State Police, has taken over the investigation into the shooting.
