Tommie Jakes Obituary News: British Racing Mourns the Loss of Promising Apprentice Jockey Tommie Jakes, Dead at 19

The British horse racing community is in mourning following the tragic death of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes, who has died at just 19 years old. His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the sport, leaving behind an overwhelming sense of sorrow among family, friends, and colleagues who knew him as a bright, talented, and dedicated young rider.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed in a joint statement by the Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) and the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA), who described Jakes as “a much-loved son and brother, and a popular member of George Boughey’s racing team.” His death, which occurred at his home near Newmarket, has left a void that will be deeply felt across the racing world.

Despite his young age, Tommie had already built a reputation as one of the sport’s most promising apprentice jockeys, earning admiration for his determination, humility, and exceptional riding ability. Over a remarkable three-year career, he secured 59 victories, including 19 wins in 2025 alone. His most recent triumph came aboard George Boughey’s Fouroneohfever at Catterick on October 18, showcasing his sharp instincts and growing command of the saddle.

Just days before his passing, Jakes was still actively riding—competing at Nottingham on Wednesday and slated for two more rides at Chelmsford on Thursday evening. His sudden death has stunned trainers, fellow riders, and fans who had watched his steady rise through the ranks of British flat racing.

Trainer Brian Meehan, speaking emotionally from California while preparing for the Breeders’ Cup Turf, paid heartfelt tribute to Jakes, recalling his dedication and warmth. “He was a regular at the yard and would ride work for me a couple of times each week. He was in last Thursday—such a lovely lad. He had great promise and gave Gascony, in the Sangster colours, an outstanding ride to win a nursery at Epsom,” Meehan said. His words echo the deep affection and respect Tommie earned throughout the sport.

The IJF and PJA expressed their condolences to the Jakes family in their joint statement:

“It is with deep sadness that we report the death of licensed apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes, 19, who tragically died at home this morning near Newmarket. Tommie was a much-loved son and brother, and a popular member of George Boughey’s racing team. His parents, Jeremy and Tonie, ask that their privacy is respected at this terrible time.”

Brant Dunshea, Acting Chief Executive of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), also released a statement honoring Jakes’s life and contributions to the sport. He described Tommie as “a talented young rider with the world at his feet,” adding that the young jockey had recently “earned great praise from trainers for his horsemanship, attitude, and professionalism.”

Dunshea confirmed that support services are being made available to assist Tommie’s family, friends, and colleagues during this immensely difficult time. “All of us in the racing community will share that pain,” he said, noting that tributes and moments of silence would be observed at Chelmsford, Southwell, and other racecourses in the coming days.

Tommie Jakes’s death marks the loss of a remarkable young talent whose potential seemed limitless. Remembered for his kindness, discipline, and quiet determination, he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire aspiring riders and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
