Troy Selwood Suicide: Former Brisbane AFL player, Troy Selwood dies unexpectedly at 40

The Selwood family is mourning the loss of Troy Selwood, a former Brisbane AFL player who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 40.

Troy, the twin brother of Adam and older brother of Joel and Scott Selwood, played 75 games for the Brisbane Lions between 2003 and 2010.

Victoria Police stated that a report will be prepared for the coroner, though the death is not being treated as suspicious.

In a statement released through the AFL, the Selwood family expressed their heartbreak:

“We are devastated by the loss of our son, brother, and father, Troy, this morning. He was deeply loved, and words cannot express how much we will miss him.

“Troy brought joy and light into the lives of everyone who knew him. He was a devoted son to Maree and Bryce, a supportive and caring brother to Adam, Joel, and Scott, and a loving father to his two beautiful children, Tom and Sadie.

“We will forever cherish his bravery, humor, deep thinking, love, and compassion. Troy had a generous spirit, cared deeply for others, and always sought to make a positive difference in people’s lives.

“We are incredibly grateful for the love and support Troy received throughout his life, and we know his many friends, teammates, and colleagues will miss him dearly.

“Troy achieved so much—from his early years as a student and AFL player to his work in recruiting young athletes to fulfill their AFL dreams, and most recently, his passion for his role at Geelong Grammar School. He touched and influenced the lives of so many people.

“We know that many will share their memories of Troy, and we appreciate all the love and support during this difficult time.”

News of Troy Selwood’s passing has deeply impacted the AFL community, with tributes pouring in throughout Tuesday.

Tony Wilson, who collaborated with the Selwood brothers on *The Selwood Boys* book series, described Troy’s passing as “a devastating loss.”
