A terrifying emergency unfolded Monday afternoon at the University of Virginia (UVA) as law enforcement agencies responded to an active shooter situation on campus, triggering an immediate shelter-in-place order for students, staff, and faculty.

According to the university’s Emergency Alert System, an alert was sent out urgently after reports surfaced of an armed subject near the Shannon Library area. The alert instructed the campus community to take immediate safety action using the widely recognized “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” protocol.
“Active shooter reported near Shannon Library. Shelter in place immediately. Run if you can, hide if you must, fight if necessary,” the message warned. “Law enforcement is on scene.”
Major Police Response on Campus
A large, coordinated response is now underway involving UVA Police, Charlottesville Police, and Virginia State Police as tactical units sweep the affected areas. Multiple officers have been seen establishing secured perimeters, blocking access points, and moving building to building as they search for the suspected shooter.
Students and staff were told to remain indoors, stay away from windows, silence phones, lock doors, and remain hidden until the all-clear is given by authorities.
Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots in the vicinity of the library, with many students seen running across campus toward nearby academic buildings and residential halls.
Situation Still Developing
At this time, law enforcement has not confirmed whether there are any victims or injuries tied to the incident. Emergency responders remain stationed around the perimeter near the Shannon Library while officials continue to gather information.
This remains an active and developing situation. Community members, students, families, and anyone nearby are urged to avoid the area entirely and continue to follow real-time directives from university officials and law enforcement.
Further updates will be provided as verified information becomes available.
