Virginia Shooting: Furter details released in early Thursday officer-involved shooting that left suspect injured at BP gas station parking lot

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — New details have emerged following an early Thursday morning officer-involved shooting that ended in the death of a suspect at a BP gas station near the intersection of Genito and Charter Colony Road, close to Old Hundred Road in Chesterfield County.

According to Chesterfield Police Chief Frank Carpenter, the incident began around 4:30 a.m. in a nearby Brandermill neighborhood, where officers responded to reports of a disturbance involving gunfire. While no one was injured at the initial scene, responding officers received a detailed description of the suspect believed to be involved.

Roughly an hour later, law enforcement located the suspect in the parking lot of the BP gas station. According to police, the confrontation quickly escalated when the suspect pulled out a firearm and opened fire on the officers. In response, at least one officer discharged their weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

Chesterfield Police confirmed that no officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire. The name of the deceased individual has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Chief Carpenter addressed the media Thursday morning, commending the officers for their swift response and emphasizing that all departmental protocols were followed.

“We’re incredibly thankful that none of our officers were hurt this morning. This is a tragic outcome, and we take any loss of life seriously. Our detectives in the Criminal Investigations Division are now working to piece together exactly what happened and why,” Carpenter said.

Authorities have not released further details about the suspect’s identity or the motive behind the initial disturbance in Brandermill. The Chesterfield County Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is actively leading the investigation, reviewing body camera footage, collecting evidence from both scenes, and interviewing any potential witnesses.

As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues. Chesterfield Police stated that the findings would be reviewed by the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office to determine whether any further actions are warranted.

The gas station, a busy location during morning hours, remained cordoned off for several hours as crime scene technicians examined the area. Local residents were advised to avoid the intersection during the initial stages of the investigation.

This remains a developing story, and authorities expect to release further updates as more information becomes available.
