Hampton, VA — The woman fatally shot at a Hampton hotel earlier this week has been identified as Monica Rodriguez, a 24-year-old woman from Newport News. Police are continuing to investigate the shooting and are asking the public for help in identifying the suspect.
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning at the Quality Inn on West Mercury Boulevard. According to the Hampton Police Division, officers were called to the hotel around 12:09 a.m. in response to reports of gunfire. Upon arriving, they found both an adult man and woman suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.
The victims were transported to the hospital by Hampton Fire and Rescue, but Rodriguez was pronounced dead from her injuries around 2:20 a.m. The male victim’s condition has not been updated by police as of Thursday.
Hampton Police said the shooting took place as the victims were walking toward their hotel room. An unidentified suspect approached them, and after a brief exchange of words, shot both individuals before fleeing the scene on foot.
Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit are leading the investigation and continue to collect evidence.
