WIGAN, Greater Manchester — A shocking outbreak of violence erupted in Wigan Town Centre early Saturday morning, leaving seven people injured in what authorities are describing as a “serious stabbing incident.”
According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the attack occurred at approximately 6:55 a.m. on August 9 along Wigan Lane. Emergency services rushed to the scene after multiple calls reported people being attacked in various locations within the town centre.
Multiple scenes are currently under investigation, with cordons in place around key areas. Victims were found in different locations, including inside a local bingo hall, near its main entrance, and in the adjoining car park. Police have confirmed that some of the injuries are serious, though the exact number of fatalities, if any, has not yet been officially released.
Several ambulance units, paramedics, and GMP response teams attended the incident within minutes. Officers worked to secure the area and direct the public away from potential danger. Locals have been strongly urged to avoid Wigan Lane and the surrounding streets while the investigation continues.
A person of interest has been detained by police in connection with the stabbings. Authorities have not yet disclosed the individual’s identity or possible motive, but confirm that the suspect is now in custody and no longer poses an active threat to the public.
GMP spokespersons have reassured residents that additional officers will remain in the area throughout the day to conduct enquiries, gather evidence, and provide reassurance to the community.
“This was a fast-moving and deeply concerning incident,” a police representative said. “We are doing everything possible to determine the circumstances and ensure the safety of everyone in Wigan.”
Local witnesses have described scenes of panic and confusion, with several bystanders rushing to help the injured before emergency crews arrived. Community leaders have expressed shock at the violence and are calling for calm while the investigation unfolds.
Authorities are urging anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage, or direct knowledge of the incident to contact GMP immediately.
