WIGAN, Greater Manchester — A shocking mass stabbing in the heart of Wigan Town Centre on Saturday morning has left the community reeling and prompted a major police and emergency services response.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that more than half a dozen people were injured in the violent spree, which unfolded shortly before 7:00 a.m. on August 9. Authorities say the first emergency calls came in at approximately 6:55 a.m., reporting multiple victims in distress across several locations along Wigan Lane.
Within minutes, multiple GMP units, paramedics, and fire crews were dispatched to the scene. On arrival, officers discovered victims scattered in different areas, including inside a bingo hall, near its entrance, and in the adjoining car park. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic, with injured individuals receiving urgent treatment as emergency workers worked to secure the area.
“Several scenes are currently cordoned off as part of our ongoing investigation,” a GMP spokesperson said in an official statement. “We urge members of the public to avoid Wigan Lane while police and forensic teams carry out their work.”
Locals reported being woken by the sound of sirens and seeing a large police presence converge on the area. “I’ve lived here all my life and never seen anything like this,” said one resident, who asked not to be named. “There were officers everywhere, and they were telling people to get back inside. You could see ambulances rushing in and out.”
Police have confirmed that a person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released, and investigators have not disclosed a possible motive.
The condition of the victims remains unclear, though officials have confirmed that all injured parties have been transported to area hospitals for treatment. No fatalities have yet been reported, but authorities have warned that the situation remains fluid.
As news of the attack spread, local leaders and residents took to social media to express shock and support for those affected. The Wigan Council issued a brief statement, saying:
“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those impacted by this morning’s events. We are in close contact with police and emergency services as the investigation continues.”
The stabbing spree has left parts of Wigan Town Centre locked down, with a significant police presence still in place as forensic teams collect evidence. GMP has appealed for witnesses or anyone with relevant video footage to come forward.
“This is a fast-moving investigation,” the GMP spokesperson added. “We understand the community will be concerned, but we want to reassure the public that there is no wider threat at this time.”
This remains a developing story, and further updates are expected as police piece together the timeline of events that led to the sudden outbreak of violence in one of Wigan’s busiest areas.
