WICHITA FALLS, TX – The Wichita Christian School community is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of William Heyen, a beloved alumnus from the Class of 2018, who tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident on Sunday. William, only in his mid-twenties, was a gifted artist, musician, and friend whose radiant spirit and creative soul left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
As a reflection of his enduring legacy, Wichita Christian School has established The William Heyen Memorial Scholarship for Exceptional Achievement in the Arts—a tribute that captures the essence of William’s life and his deep love for both the arts and his Savior.
Honoring a Life of Faith, Creativity, and Compassion
William Heyen was more than just a talented student; he was a light within the WCS community. During his years at Wichita Christian School, William excelled in band, choir, drama, and visual arts, consistently bringing excellence and a heart for worship into every performance and project. He had a unique ability to inspire joy, unite people through creativity, and lead others toward Christ through his talents.
“William didn’t just perform; he worshiped through the arts,” said one of his former teachers. “Whether it was playing an instrument, painting a scene, or acting on stage, he used every gift he had to glorify God.”
William’s classmates remember him as someone whose faith was genuine, whose kindness was unwavering, and whose humor and humility made everyone feel seen and valued. He had a knack for making people laugh, a listening ear for friends in need, and a heart that overflowed with compassion.
The William Heyen Memorial Scholarship
In response to this tragic loss, Wichita Christian School has created the William Heyen Memorial Scholarship for Exceptional Achievement in the Arts, which will be awarded annually to a graduating senior who reflects William’s commitment to artistic excellence, spiritual maturity, and Christlike character.
This scholarship is:
- Exclusively available to seniors at Wichita Christian School.
- Designed to honor students gifted in the arts—including music, drama, visual art, and other creative disciplines.
- Awarded to a student who demonstrates a deep personal faith and a desire to use their gifts to serve and glorify God.
- A living memorial to William’s legacy, encouraging future generations to follow in his footsteps by embracing both creativity and Christian witness.
“This scholarship is not just about talent,” said a member of the selection committee. “It’s about the heart behind the talent—the kind of heart William had.”
A Legacy That Lives On
William’s sudden departure has left a profound void, not only within the WCS family but throughout the broader community of Wichita Falls. Yet through this memorial scholarship, his legacy will continue to inspire, empower, and uplift young artists who share his passion and faith.
