Xavier Sterling named as person killed in Monday shooting at Chances Restaurant and Lounge in Hampton

A night out in downtown Hampton turned deadly Monday evening when a man was fatally shot outside a local lounge, prompting a homicide investigation by the Hampton Police Division.

 

Authorities say the shooting occurred around 10:48 p.m. on May 6 at Chance’s Restaurant and Lounge, located in the 500 block of Settlers Landing Road.

Responding officers arrived on the scene to find 29-year-old Xavier Sterling suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders from the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division provided immediate medical assistance and rushed Sterling to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to preliminary reports, the incident stemmed from an altercation that began inside the establishment and later spilled out onto the street. At some point during the confrontation, an unidentified individual opened fire, striking Sterling.

The suspect fled the scene before police arrived. As of Tuesday morning, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not released a suspect description.

The investigation remains active and ongoing as detectives work to piece together the circumstances surrounding Sterling’s death.
